They were introduced in 1989 and were a hatchback version based on the Toyota Sprinter Cielo and Corolla Seca. The early version was produced until 1991. From 1990 – 1992 the GSi model was available with the 130 hp twin cam engine. 1991 saw a change of the badge from lower Prizm to italicized capitals, PRIZM, and various color options as opposed to black sedans that were previously available.
Generation One model years were 1989 – 1992. In 4 door sedan and 5 door hatchback with these engine options:
1.6 L I4, 1.6 L I4 105 hp, 1.6 L I4 130 hp backed with a 3 or 4 speed automatic, or 5 speed manual transmission.
Generation Two model years were produced from 1992 – 1997 in a 4 door sedan and 5 door station wagon. In 1993 there was an addition to interior roominess resulting in an upgrade to “compact” status. The LSi version sported the 1.8 L engine and optional automatic 4 speed instead of the 3 speed transmission. In 1994 further upgrades included leather seats, and second air bag.
1.6 L 105 hp, 1.8 L 105 – 115 hp, 3 or 4 speed automatic, 5 speed manual transmissions.
Generation Three model years are 1998 – 2002
1.8 L 120 -125 hp, all aluminum engine with timing chain instead of a belt, and again the 3 or 4 speed auto and 5 speed manual transmission.
