The VW Passat includes an engine oil service reminder in the odometer cluster. After you change the Passat’s oil, the service light does not automatically turn off. You’ll have to manually reset the service light for it to turn off. The process applies to all 1996 to 1999 Volkswagen Passat models, including the 1.9 TDI.
Push and hold the stem on the right side of your Passat’s odometer cluster, beneath the speedometer gauge.
Insert the Passat’s ignition key. Turn it to the “On” setting. Release the stem. The letters “OEL” will now appear in the cluster.
Turn the stem on the left side of the Passat’s odometer cluster to the right, until a series of dashes appears in the message center. If your Passat has an analog clock, pull the stem outward instead. The oil service light is now reset.
