2012 Mazda Mazda2 Review

Mazda2 FrontThe Mazda MAZDA2, known as the Demio in other areas of the world, made its debut in the United States for the 2011 model year. The fuel efficient subcompact is largely the same as it was last year.

The 2012 Mazda MAZDA2 is powered by a 1.5L four-cylinder engine that pumps out 100 horsepower, which is suitable to carry the car’s sub-2400 pound body without much effort. The engine is rated at an impressive 29 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway, when coupled with the manual transmission. Opting for the automatic transmission reduces the fuel economy rating to 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.

The 2012 MAZDA2 is only available as a hatchback, and comes in two trim levels: Sport and Touring.

Power windows, mirrors and door locks, remote keyless entry and a CD/MP3 player are standard on the Sport model, while the upscale Touring model gets features like a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a six-speaker sound system, steering wheel mounted audio controls, cruise control and an instrument cluster trip computer. Alloy wheels (instead of wheel covers), a spoiler and a chrome exhaust tip also come with the Touring.

The 2012 MAZDA2’s five-speed manual transmission shifts nicely, and shares the same shift knob as the Mazda Miata and Mazda3. Miata owners will likely recognize the MAZDA2’s comfortable steering wheel as it, as it appears to be the same one included in the Miata, unlike the one in the larger MAZDA3.

The 2012 Mazda MAZDA2 has an MSRP range of $14,530 to $16,020, before destination charges and extra packages and equipment. It carries Mazda’s 36-month, 36,000-mile warranty as well as its 60-month, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
